The Make-Up sind seit dem Single Release von "Blue is Beautiful" und "R U A Believer" eine musikalische und politische Institution der Indie und Rock Szene Washington's.
Einzigartige Live-Shows, welche zu ihrer Zeit an Gospel Konzerte erinnert haben müssen, losgelöst von Religion wurde unter tosendem Applaus eine neue Freiheit zelebriert, der schnöde Rock'n'Roll bekam ein neues Gesicht, und das Konzert wurde zur Messe gegen den Kapitalismus.
Trotz zahlreicher Tourneen und erfolgreichen Veröffentlichungen auf K-Records und Dischord blieben The Make-Up immer ein Geheimtipp und sind 2001 in der Versenkung verschwunden, seither hat Ian Svenonius die Welt mit neuen Projekten wie: Weird War, Chain and The Gang oder Escape-Ism bereist und niemals aufgehört neue, relevante Musik zu veröffentlichen.
2017 kündigte die Band ein Reunion Konzert auf dem Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona an, darauf folgten vereinzelte Konzerte in Europa und den USA, und 2020 haben wir die Ehre das The Make-Up nach (zu) langer Zeit endlich wieder nach Deutschland kommen, und das auch nur für ein exklusives Konzert am 16.07.2020 im Festsaal Kreuzberg, Berlin.

Make-Up is a group that composes superior, original music, performs that music dynamically in spaces and nightclubs, and organizes the performances at which they appear across the U.S.A. These performances have been characterized by the freneticism, catharsis and spirituality of what can only be described as GOSPEL MUSIC. They are a total departure from the boring pantomime of rock 'n' roll as we know it, inflicting a sublime theatre on their audience which resembles a baptism, or perhaps an orgy. Their 'singer' is typically employed as a lead-chanter, while the others perpetrate a rhythmic drone on the subjects of their "Rhythm Hive."..

They are, on guitar, microphone and organ, James Canty; on center microphone, Ian Svenonius; on bass guitar and microphone, Michelle Mae and on the drum kit, Steve Gamboa.

Ian, Steve and James were from Washington, D.C. while Michelle was from Olympia, Washington, but they formed in February 1995 to present their international vision to a world they are sure is steeped in stultifying cynicism.

Ian never stopped releasing music or playing exceptional shows all over the World with his projects Chain and The Gang, Escape-Ism or Weird War. In 2017 the Band reunited to play at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, and later to play selected Shows in the US and Europe. In 2020 The Make Up will return to Europe, and will play their first Show in Germany since the 90s.
