PHANTOM GHOST
Off out on their fourth album excursion and Phantom Ghost are travelling light through a cheerfully upbeat world. A world, not this time of spooks and spectres but of amicable malcontents, dallying dream-dancers and carefree loafers. Yet despite this terrestrial cast and the cutback instrumentation of the songs – (prepared) piano and vocals – Thrown out of Drama School is an exceedingly festive affair, real red-letter day music. Their common passion for the made-up, the thrown-together and the weird and wonderful has paved the way for Dirk von Lowtzow and Thies Mynther for the last ten years and now they have arrived at a point where a dalliance with artificiality, mannerisms, exalted quotations and theatrical poses can be observed in it’s purest form: on the stage, in drama school, behind and in front of the velvet curtain.
Mit leichtem Gepäck reisen Phantom Ghost auf ihrem inzwischen vierten Album durch eine heiter gestimmte Welt, die diesmal nicht von Geistern, sondern freundlichen Querulanten, vertrödelten Traumtänzern und sorglosen Müßiggängern bewohnt ist. Trotz dieses irdischen Personals und der reduzierten Instrumentierung aller Stücke – (präpariertes) Klavier und Gesang – ist Thrown Out Of Drama School ein überaus feierliches Album geworden, richtige Festtagsmusik. Ihrer gemeinsamen Vorliebe für Erfundenes, Zusammengereimtes und Versponnenes gehen Dirk von Lowtzow und Thies Mynther bereits seit zehn Jahren nach, und nun sind sie dort angekommen, wo sich das Spiel mit Künstlichkeiten, Manierismen, exaltierten Zitaten und theatralen Posen in seiner Reinform studieren lässt: auf der Bühne, in der Schauspielklasse, vor und hinter dem samtenen Vorhang.
